The Weekly Times Farm, September 2015 featured an article on Ashburton Meats. The article reads:

“Gippsland beef and lamb farmer Col McMicking (right) will be donning an apron this month at the Royal Melbourne Show to cook up his award-winning Gippsland Pure Beef for the public.

A win, for the second year running, at the Royal Melbourne Fine Food Awards secured Col his spot as an exhibitor in the show’s new Winning Tastes Pavilion. The Tarwin Lower farmer’s Gippsland Pure Beef won gold last year and silver this year in the branded beef category.

He sells the majority of his beef and lamb directly to the public through Ashburton Meats butcher shop in Melbourne, which he bought in 2007 and now co-owns with shop manager Paul Klooster.

“It has been fantastic,” Col said, of his decision to sell directly to the public. “Sales have probably tripled since I bought the business.”

Paul said Ashburton Meats hopes to build up a database of potential online customers at this year’s show.

“Last year we went to the show, not sure what response we would get,” Paul said. “But it was really good. We picked up 15-20 regular customers. Last year we were there for four days. This year we’ll be there for 11.

“We want to take orders and deliver,” he said, “so we’re going back (to the show) this year with the intent of going online.”

Three of Ashburton Meats’ sausages, and the company’s Gippsland Lamb, also won medals at the Royal Melbourne Fine Food Awards.
